How to Travel to a Galaxy Far, Far Away Aboard a Disney Ship

By: Disney DestinationsMay 4, 2021

This post was written by Danny Handke, Senior Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering for the Disney Parks Blog.

May the 4th be with you! Those of you who’ve met me know I am a huge Star Wars fan. So as a Walt Disney Imagineer, getting to work on projects that bring Star Wars to life on board our cruise ships and in our theme parks and resorts is a dream come true for me.

And now, I can finally talk about the project I’m currently working on – Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge – coming to our newest ship setting sail summer 2022. We gave you a first look at this incredible space in our grand reveal of the Disney Wish last week, and today I want to share more details about this first-of-its kind Star Wars-themed space for adults on a Disney ship.

That’s right parents … It’s not just your kids who get to have all of the fun! Every evening, this high-end bar styled as a luxurious yacht-class spaceship is reserved exclusively for adults. For the first time on one of our ships, you can embark on a space-jumping tour of the Star Wars galaxy with interactive tasting experiences and signature beverages inspired by the films.

The venue’s sleek interior design and metallic detailing is inspired by lavish star cruisers similar to Dryden Vos’ ship in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” While you sip your galactic concoctions, this space-faring voyage will transport you to iconic locations from the eras of the Republic, Empire and First Order, employing hyperspace jumps to travel from planet to planet while sensational scenes unfold just beyond the ship’s panoramic viewport at each stop.

Ranging from serene vistas to action-packed encounters, the spectacles seen through this virtual “window” into the galaxy will feature famous space ships from the films and fan-favorite locales like Batuu, Tatooine, Mustafar and Coruscant. The experience will be amplified by surround-sound audio and a holotube that presents holographic models of nearby ships.

While we’re talking Star Wars, did you know that Disney Cruise Line will once again offer Star Wars Day at Sea in early 2022? Yep, the force will be with you during select seven-night Caribbean cruises aboard the Disney Fantasy. Here are some of my favorite things about this intergalactic experience:

  • The entire day is filled with Star Wars excitement—costume celebrations, movie screenings, family trivia, a ship-wide scavenger hunt and youth club fun with BB-8!
  • You can meet over a dozen Star Wars characters, like Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and Darth Vader and more. You may even have a surprise run-in with roaming characters such as Boba Fett, Jawas and First Order Stormtroopers.
  • There’s an incredible deck show starring Rey and other popular characters that concludes with a fireworks spectacle set to John Williams’ Star Wars score. What a way to end an unforgettable day!

Last up, I want to share with you two of my four-year-old daughter’s favorite places to visit when we’re on a Disney cruise, which means so much to me because I had a hand in designing these spaces. Aboard two of our ships, kids can have their own Star Wars experience inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club.

On the Disney Dream, kids can design a starship, train like a Jedi or climb into Han Solo’s cockpit in Star Wars: Millennium Falcon. And on the Disney Fantasy, they can train with Jedi or X-Wing pilots, connect to legendary spacecrafts via an interactive “holotable” and combat First Order Stormtroopers face-to-face at Star Wars: Command Post.

The best part? We’re not done creating Star Wars experiences for Disney Cruise Line guests… but I can’t tell you anything else yet! If you want to know more, keep following along to be among the first to hear about what other out-of-this-world adventures we have up our sleeves.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Launches in 2022 at Walt Disney World Resort

By: Disney DestinationsMay 4, 2021

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will take Guests to a galaxy far, far away for an all-immersive, two-night vacation experience that goes beyond anything Disney has ever created before. What exactly does “all-immersive” mean? Well, in honor of May the 4th, here’s a little hint …

Not sure if what you just saw is actually what you just saw? Maybe you should watch it one more time. Or 10.

Yes, that’s a new type of lightsaber Rey is holding in her hand, created by Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development. Guests who experience Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be the first to see it in action – along with so much more – starting in 2022 when this amazing new two-night adventure debuts. When Guests watch that lightsaber activate right before their eyes it will be just one of the countless ways that, from the moment they arrive to the moment they depart, they’ll be plunged into a Star Wars story where their decisions and actions – or even the casual conversations they may have – determine how their personal journey unfolds.

Guests’ adventure begins at the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser terminal at Walt Disney World, where Guests will gather with fellow passengers before departing for their intergalactic destination. Guests will soon enter a special Launch Pod and leave their world behind as they make a hyperspace jump to a galaxy far, far away.

Guests will watch through viewports as they approach the massive and magnificent Halcyon starcruiser, which will be their home for the next two nights. For a limited time, Disney’s Hollywood Studios Guests can now see a model of the ship on display inside Walt Disney Presents – another special May the 4th surprise!

When the Launch Pod’s airlock slides open, Guests will take their first step into a galaxy far, far away as Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser comes to life all around them. During their stay aboard this glamorous ship, Guests may interact with an eclectic group of characters both familiar and new, possibly including the starcruiser’s strong and charismatic captain, a plucky ship’s mechanic and a galactic superstar who can captivate an entire room with the crook of one jewel-encrusted purple Twi’lek finger.

This singing sensation will be a featured performer during one of the exquisite dining experiences inside the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, which you can see in this artist concept rendering we’re sharing today for the first time. The enticing supper club’s name is an homage to Corellia, the planet known galaxy-wide for its shipyards that gave us not only the Halcyon starcruiser, but also the Millennium Falcon. The dining room is a bright and welcoming hall that will offer breakfast and lunch to passengers before transitioning each evening into a lavish multi-course menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins.

As the journey continues, Guests will have the opportunity to train in the ancient ways of the lightsaber, learn more about the inner workings of the Halcyon starcruiser and even jump on a transport to the planet Batuu to further their adventure inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This isn’t storytelling – it’s storyliving, where Guests will see, feel and live Star Wars in a whole new way.

We’ll have much more to share about Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser in the future as we look forward to its 2022 debut; you can always visit starwarsgalacticstarcruiser.com for more details, and sign up there to receive updates.

And since it’s May the 4th, let’s check out a few other Star Wars happenings at Walt Disney World in honor of this special day.

Star Wars Galactic Outpost at Disney Springs and select locations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios are showcasing new merchandise available starting today (while supplies last), including apparel featuring the new Disney+ series “The Bad Batch” (also debuting today). There are also new items from the Rainbow Star Wars Collection, as well as new Star Tours-inspired Disney Parks Wishables including R2-D2 and C-3PO.

Today and tomorrow, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is offering special Star Wars-themed desserts and beverages available at select locations throughout the park, including the new Dark Side Chocolate Creation and returning favorite Lightsaber Churro. Also, through tomorrow, Disney Springs will offer the Grogu Mini Dome Cake at Amorette’s Patisserie and the Millennium Falcon Chocolate Pop at The Ganachery.

As you can see, the Force is strong with us here at Walt Disney World Resort. So however you’re celebrating Star Wars today … May the 4th be with you!

‘The World’s Most Magical Celebration’ Begins Oct. 1 in Honor of Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th Anniversary

By: Disney DestinationsFebruary 19, 2021

It’s an event five decades in the making!

Beginning Oct. 1, Walt Disney World Resort will throw “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” in honor of our 50th anniversary, bringing new experiences to our four theme parks and beyond. This milestone is such a big deal, we’ve even coined a new word – “EARidescence” – to describe what Guests will see when they visit. Our Disney teams are creating all sorts of new decorations that will shimmer and sparkle all day and into the night.

As part of the celebration, Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park will add to its royal makeover from last year. The castle will feature golden bunting and a 50th anniversary crest as part of its festive new look.

The castle will add even more magic at night, joined by icons at each of the other three theme parks as they transform into Beacons of Magic, including pixie dust on Cinderella Castle, magical fireflies inhabiting the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, and special new touches coming to life on the Hollywood Tower Hotel at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

And at EPCOT, new lights will shine across the reflective panels of Spaceship Earth, connecting to one another and resembling stars in a nighttime sky. This permanent new lighting will continue beyond “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” as a defining feature of the park.

Guests will also want to keep an eye out for Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, who will have sparkling new looks for the celebration. As hosts of the event, they’ll be dressed for the occasion in custom-made fashions of EARidescent fabric with gold highlights.

We’ll have more to share about our plans for this 18-month long “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” in the future as we ramp up to the big day on Oct. 1!

Things You Should Not Go Without When Visiting a Disney Parks

img_2651

First I would like to say that I am an over packer.  I like to have everything with me that I might need.  I feel that there should not be anything out there that can spoil my fun.  Things like blister, headache, dead camera, rain or constant hunger.  If you are a parent especially of young children you know constant hunger, they are always hungry.  Even though I am an over packer for everything I narrowed down a few things that are absolutely necessary when visiting the parks.

Here is the list:

  • Refillable water bottle.  I use Brita.  Drinks are expensive and the free ice water from quick service people say it doesn’t taste good. And who wants to lug plastic water bottles for the whole day. I have always used the Brita water bottle with a filter and just dumped the ice water in it and didn’t find it bad tasting.  There are fountains everywhere that you can refill your bottles at, but keep in mind in hot months the water will be warmimg_0935
  • Sunscreen, Lip Balm with spf and a hat.  These are absolutely necessary for really hot months.
  • Snacks – no melt ones.  So things like trail mix minus chocolate chip, nuts, fruit, etc
  • Body Glide – things rub together in hot weather no matter what age or size you are and chafing can ruin your trip.  I always pack a body glide its a must.
  • Pain Killers / Allergy Meds / Mini first aid kit with bandages . img_0934
  • Ponchos
  • Hand sanitizer / Clorox Wipes / napkins
  • Ziploc bags to keep your electronics dry while on wet rides.
  • And if you love to take lots of pictures and videos extra battery, chargers, sd cardsimg_0936

Even though you can purchase most of these things at the parks the prices are inflated and why pay more unless you really have to.

If you want to see what I pack you can read it here;

Is the Free Meal Plan at Walt Disney World Worth it?

IMG_1553 (1)

The time is running out to book this years Disney’s Free Dining offer.  Still not sure if the deals is as good as it sounds?  In this blog I am going to compare some prices for you so you can make an educated decision.  This is Disney’s most popular offer and I can see why.  For one it takes a guessing game out of planning.  You don’t have to worry about costs of food if you stick to what is offered on the meal plan.  And there is a lot of food to go around, you just have to use it wisely.  Even when we don’t get a free meal plan we will purchase a dinning plan depending on the length of our vacation.  Knowing how much I am spending before I go is what we like.  So let me break it down for you.  I will use price comparison for my family which is family of four two adults and two kids over 10.  Which in my opinion the free dining plan is worth the most for.

The cost of Dining Plan for 2019 is as follows

Adult – per night         Child – per night
(children are 3-9 years old)

Quick Service Dining Plan                                $52.50                                    $23.78

  • 2 quick-service meals
  • 2 snacks
  • 1 refillable mug

Regular Dining Plan                                          $75.49                                    $27.98

  • 1 table-service meal
  • 1 quick-service meal
  • 2 snacks
  • 1 refillable mug

Deluxe Dining Plan                                          $116.25                                  $43.49

  • 3 meals (any combination)
  • 2 snacks
  • 1 refillable mug

What’s Included in the meal plan other than what is listed –

  • Quick Service meals include a beverage
  •  Table service entrée includes dessert (lunch and dinner only) OR full buffet and a  beverage
  • With a Deluxe Meal Plan your table service includes appetizer, entrée, and dessert (lunch and dinner), OR full buffet and a beverage .
  • Beverages are as follows – Guests under 21 years of age can choose one non-alcoholic beverage (including specialty beverages — i.e. Artisanal Milk Shakes,  Fresh Smoothies, Premium Hot Chocolates, or Soda, Coffee or Tea — where offered). Guests 21 and older can can choose either one non-alcoholic beverage (including specialty beverages where offered) or one single serving mixed cocktail, beer, or wine (where offered) within their meal entitlement.

So how do we know which deal is better the room discount or the free meal plan.  Again it depends where you are staying and how many people are in your party.  I will break it down based on my family

Staying at Pop Century (Value Resort) Port Orleans (Moderate Resort) Polynesian (Deluxe Resort)

$1696.03

$3563

Free Meal Plan with a 7 day ticket

Pay for Meal Plan with room discount and 7 day Can ticket

Room Discount with 7 day Canada day ticket deal no Meal plan

$2572.84

$3201.06

$4890.96

Average price of a quick service meal $14.99 x 2 $14.99 x 2 $14.99 x 1
Average price of a snack $5.00 x 2 $5.00 x 2 $5.00 x 2
Average price of a sit down meal $30.00 (they range from 15.99 – 35.00
Average price of a non alcoholic beverage $4.00 for a regular drink no specialty drinks x2 $4.00 for a regular drink no specialty drinks x2 $4.00 for a regular drink no specialty drinks x2

Hopefully this will make sense.  I included average price for all the meals and drinks that we would have at the park.  If I was paying out of pocket for my meal while eating as if I was on a quick service plan I would spend on an average of $52.00 a day per person (includes coffee and snack in the morning, quick service and beverage at lunch and same for dinner). Total for my family would be $208. a day for four of us for six nights $1248.  If I add that to my discounted room at Value resort with a discounted ticket for Canadians that is available now my total would be $3820.84 . As you can see free meal plan is saving me about $636.31.  For moderate if I applied same for quick service I would be at $4449.06 I would be saving on a free meal plan about $873.5.  If I were to stay at Poly and eat on a dining plan like the one offered with free dining plan for deluxe resort I would be spending per person per day at least $67 for the total of six nights times four people is $1608.  The price difference is $1056.44 that I would be saving if I went with a free meal plan.  Obviously if you have smaller children that can eat of of your plate or order from the kids menue the price would be different.  You can also save by purchasing groceries and eating some snacks and meals from that, like pack your own sandwiches and snacks for the park and eat breakfast in your room.  This can especially be cost effective if you combine it with a room discount.    It all really depends what you want out of your trip.  If adding your meal plan is important to you than in my opinion for a family with four people over 10 years of age with big appetites definitely go for the free meal plan.

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and Family Suite Review

Just this past August we had the pleasure of staying at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.  I originally booked Little Mermaids Room which is a standard room with two double beds.  But with some Pixie dust that came our way we got upgraded to a Lion King Suite with two bathrooms, separate bedroom with 1 Queen Bed, Dining area with 1 Double-Size Table Bed and a separate room with  1 Double-Size Sleeper Sofa.

Let me give you a bit of an overview of this resort.  It is the newest Value Resort consisting of four different areas.  Nemo, Cars and Lion King are all family suites that sleep up to six adults. The Little Mermaid Area is Standard rooms with two double beds.

There is a main pool called “The Big Blue Pool” the Largest Resort Pool in Walt Disney World Resort. The pool features state-of-the-art underwater speakers and it’s themed after Disney•Pixar movie Finding Nemo. There are two more pools—Cozy Cone Pool, themed after Disney•Pixar film Cars, and Flippin’ Fins Pool, featuring the “Under the Sea Orchestra” conducted by Sebastian from The Little Mermaid.   Additionally, there’s an interactive water play area for little ones located nearby.

The Dining locations include Landscape of Flavors serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, featuring 5 distinctive food shops that serve fresh, made-to-order cuisine. From tasty international fare to classic American favorites, there’s something for everyone at this quick service location.  While poolside you can enjoy refreshing beverage or snack at the Drop Off Pool Bar.  In-room pizza delivery is also available.

This resort is also Dog Friendly.  Some of the other amenities that are at this resort are Disney Bus Transportation, Disney’s Magical Express, Complimentary WiFi Internet, Parking $13 per night, Online Check In, Resort Airline Check In, ATM, Currency Exchange, Child Care Service, Designated Smoking Area, Laundry and Dry Cleaning Services, Mail Services and Merchandise delivery and pick up.

You can also enjoy “Movies Under The Stars” nightly.  Watch some of your favorite Disney films outside in the fresh evening air.

There is also a great gift store called “Ink & Paint Shop” located in the lobby.

You can watch the full Resort Tour including the Lion King Family Suite here .

Now let’s move on to what I thought of this resort.  I have stayed at all the value resorts to date and this is by far the best themed resort.  I absolutely love this resort for its theming.  If you have a young child this is definitely the place to be.  As far as Disney in your face it doesn’t get better than this.  The Family Suites are specious and comfortably fit my family which consist of two adults and two teenagers boy and a girl.  This was especially great because we all got our own space.  We loved having two bathrooms as well.  Down side of the family suite for us was that there weren’t any comfortable chairs to sit on.

This resort offers a bit more choices for dining than the other Value resorts.  It has more food shops that offer different variety of foods.  I think this was great because my family all like different things and we could get it all in one place.

We found the pool area to be very busy all the time.  We swam later at night after returning from the parks and it was busy.  We even tried going to the smaller pools and it was equally as busy.  When we first checked in it was mid day and we walked by the pool and it was packed.  I believe there was no down time for the pool.

In my opinion this is a great resort if you are traveling with young children and don’t mind constant mayhem.  I like to walk around the resort in early hours like 6:30 am to get a good feel for the resort and this one was very much alive that early in the morning.  I don’t mean this in a negative way because I would stay here again in a heart beat, what I mean is if you are looking for quiet relaxing place this is not the resort for you.  We have older kids so for us it was a bit too busy.

This resort is also on a hire side for pricing. The Little Mermaid Room starts at $136usd and The Family Suites start at $325usd.  There are always some discounts out that you can use for the family suites.  Unfortunately The Little Mermaids room most of the time get excluded from any deal offered.

To conclude this review I think this is a fun resort to stay on.  It is Disney theme at it’s best.  It might be too busy for me but I would stay here again without a doubt.

Everything You Need to Know About Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party or MNSSHP is one of my favourite ticketed events at Walt Disney World.  If you like Halloween time you will love this special event.  Disney just released their 2019 dates on January 15th, so its a good time to start planning your trip.

img_8880

This year, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party will transform Magic Kingdom® Park into a spook-tacular celebration for a total of 36 nights! They added two additional nights to the event, extending it to Nov. 1, 2019.

Here are the dates for 2019:

  • Aug. 16, 20, 23, 27, 30
  • Sept. 2, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27, 29
  • Oct. 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 25, 27, 29, 31
  • Nov. 1

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party tickets start at $79 in advance or $89 at the gate, if available. You can purchase tickets here.

img_9023

The party starts officially at 7 p.m. at Magic Kingdom.  Halloween party guests are allowed to enter the park starting at 4 p.m., Since you do not require to have an actual park ticket this is great. You still need the event ticket but this almost feels like you are getting an extra day at the parks.  The park closes for regular guests at 6 p.m.   Party wristbands are given to party guests entering the park and if you are already at the park you can pick up your wrist band with a valid party ticket at select locations in the park. Beginning at 6 p.m., cast members are stationed at different points throughout the park to direct the non party guests toward the exit.  The guests that are just arriving are directed to the Market Street which is the back alley between La Chapeau and Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. Make sure you pick up your trick or treating bag as well as the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party 2019 Map for the party where all the events times are listed.  The Map also has candy locations and special treats for purchase locations.

Costume guidlines

Come Dressed for the Occasion
Looking forward to dressing up for the occasion? Learn which costumes you can wear to this event— and those you can’t.  During Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Guests of all ages are encouraged to dress up in their favorite Halloween costumes. The tone of the event is, well, “Not-So-Scary”, and is appropriate for children of all ages.
Costume Guidelines
Please note these specific costume guidelines for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. While we encourage creativity, we also value safety and good judgment. If you’re planning to attend these special holiday events, take a moment to read over our latest rules and regulations:
General
  • Disney reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire that is considered inappropriate or attire that could detract from the experience of other Guests.
  • All Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.
  • Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.
  • Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
  • Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
  • Guests who do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused entry into, and/or removed from, unless his or her costume can be modified to meet the above standards.

For Guests ages 13 and under:

  • Costumes and some masks may be worn, as long as the mask does not cover the entire face and eyes are visible.

For Guests ages 14 and older:

  • Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.
  • Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (e.g., full-length Princess dresses)
  • Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.
  • Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts, and hats are acceptable.
  • Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords, and tutus. Headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.
  • Masks of any kind may not be worn.

There will be will be spooky fun for everyone, including:

Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular
Chills, thrills and villains await during a wickedly fun celebration hosted by the

Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus.

Happy HalloWishes Fireworks Show
Sing along with some of the most infamous Disney bad guys and girls in history as this fall spectacular lights up the sky!

Trick-or-Treat Throughout the Park
Get your fill of Halloween sweets and snacks as you gather up goodies from land to land.
2015-09-15 20.24.58
Encounter Iconic Disney Characters
Attend the Scream-o-Ween Dance Party
HalloWishes Dessert Party
Strawberries covered in white chocolate, available at the Happy HalloWishes Dessert Premium Package
There will be plenty of different treats available that aren’t available any other night.  They will be available for purchase at various locations.
Some of the rides have different overlays for Halloween.  Last year Space Mountain was complete dark during the ride and Pirates of the Caribbean actually had real pirates.  A must for Halloween party is Hunted Mansion.  And don’f forget the Mad Tea Party.
If inclement weather may be on the horizon during your visit, be sure to catch the early stage show and parade in case the later ones get cancelled.  We had rain during our most of the day and it stopped raining just before the party.  Which was great because nothing got cancelled but we did miss out on the Headless Horseman because it was too wet for him.
Lets not forget all the fun Photo Pass opportunities available throughout the park.  Make sure you get as many as possible.
There are no Fast Passes available during the party hours and there are several locations open for dining.  If you wish to have a sit down meal make sure you make those reservations ahead of time.
My word of advice is arrive early, don’t waste your time for a sit down meal. Try to have a plan as to what is important and what is not and enjoy yourself .
If you need help purchasing and planning your next Disney Vacations make sure you go here.
